9.13.2026 – lie on sandy beach

lie on sandy beach
nothing whatever to do
those pleasanter things

Based on the poem, Careless Lines of Labour by Franklin Pierce Adams as it appears on the webpage, Poetry Explorer.

I

O ye that lie on the sandy beach,
With nothing whatever to do,
Beyond the beckoning, grasping reach
Of the city and all its crew—

II

There are pleasanter things in summertime
Than to coax the bashful laugh,
Than to build the lofty and careful rhyme,
And to prune a paragraph.

III

There are pleasanter things to do at night
Alluringer things by day,
Than to seek a subject on which to write
A merrily mirthsome lay.

IV

And so when it squeaks as I strike the strings,
And I long to be labour-free,
I just go and do those pleasanter things
I spoke of in II and III.

So so so many things to do.

Each and every day, hour and minute, there is something that needs my attention.

Life, job, kids, something.

But for now, we live five minutes from the Atlantic Coast.

We live on an island and can park for free and residents of this resort community so no need to worry about a spot for the car.

Load up and drive five minutes.

Unpack and walk the beach path for five minutes.

And there we are.

So so many things to do.

I just go and do those pleasanter things.
