May 5 – Thundery Rain Chance

Thundery Rain Chance
Heard on Brit weather report
Spot on for Georgia

Actually I heard this years ago and continue to hear on the weather from London listening to ClassicFM at work.

Since first hearing it, I have been petitioning my good friend, Chesley McNeil at 11Alive to use it here in the United States as it is perfect for the weather the we are having right now.

I am not sure about ‘Bucket Lists’ as I see them as being somewhat limiting in scope, but I would die a happy man if I can get Chesley to adopt the use of ‘thundery rain’ in his forecast.

May 4 – book lovers welcome

book lovers welcome
as all great literature
haunted by the ghosts

Adapted from the notice posted at the entrance to the bookshop, Parnassus at Home, located in, according to the book, The Haunted Bookshop, by Christopher Morley, Brooklyn, NY.

from a framed placard at the entrance to the bookstore

There was a time in my life when almost everyone in the circles that I inhabited, owned a copy of this book.

One person whose name I can’t recall, felt it was her prize possession, especially after she had it signed by Garrision Keillor.

If you haven’t read it, it is a pleasant couple of hours and available online for free here.

As an aside, the first time I was given a copy by my sister Janet’s mother-in-law, Betty Benish. I still have it.

May 3 – Near us

The word is near us
in our mouth and in our heart
of faith we proclaim

But what does it say?

“The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Romans 10 8-10 (NIV)

May 1 – We the People

justifiably sick
and hopelessly unequal,
divided, very angry

The following is excerpted from: Clinton-era politics refuses to die by Hamilton Nolan

The Republican party has long been a corrupt tool for serving the interests of the rich by lying to the poor; dwelling on their role in bringing us here is like scolding an alligator for biting off your hand after you stuck it in his mouth.

The Democrats are the ones who were supposed to save us. It was their failure in this duty that allowed the catastrophes to pile up. They failed to stop the post-Reagan explosion of economic inequality; they failed to stop the militarism that has embroiled us in endless war; they failed to argue for things like healthcare and education as rights rather than purchases; they fed our most vulnerable citizens to an evil machine labeled “criminal justice” in exchange for votes from racists. They earned their turn in power by agreeing not to use that power for the common good.

And here we are: incredibly divided, hopelessly unequal, justifiably sick of our broken institutions, and very, very angry.
