1.6.2020 – New Day, Year, Decade

New Day, Year, Decade
Same Drive, Same Office, Same Desk
Empty Calendar

Back at work after vacation.

It is a new day.

It is a new year.

It is even a new decade.

It all feels the same.

Right square in the middle of my desk is a 2020 calendar.

It is blank.

It is blank, for now.

Hard to imagine how it might be filled up.

Hard to remember how last year’s filled up as well.

Days crawl.

Years fly.

Both get to the finish line at the same time.

1.5.2020 – way to bright sunrise?

way to bright sunrise?
guiding star but cloudy sky
rouse and raise your voice

When love just seems so far away,
keep hauling, keep hauling.
The tide will flood your heart some day,
keep hauling boys.

When your guiding star’s in a cloudy sky,
keep hauling, keep hauling.
You’ll find your way to the bright sunrise,
keep hauling boys.

Keep hauling ho,
rouse and raise your voice.
Hold your course and don’t let go,
keep hauling boys.

If you gave your best and your heart stayed true,
keep hauling, keep hauling.
There’s only one thing left to do,
keep hauling boys.

If you fought so hard and you lost your hold,
keep hauling, keep hauling.
Remember fate rewards the bold,
keep hauling boys.

Keep hauling ho,
rouse and raise your voice.
Hold your course and don’t let go,
keep hauling boys.

Whatever your ship and wherever your sea,
keep hauling, keep hauling.
Whatever your storm or your rocks may be,
keep hauling boys.

Keep hauling ho,
rouse and raise your voice.
Hold your course and don’t let go,
keep hauling boys.

1.4.2020 – one to give away

one to give away
piece of my mind, peace of mind
one out there to find

Easy to see which one is which.

I am going to give him a ‘piece of my mind!’

I am searching for ‘peace of mind.”

Flip it.

I can give you peace of mind.

I am searching for a piece of my mind.

I lose my mind often enough.

Often at work I ask friends, “I think I have lost my mind. Have you seen it? It’s gray, about the size of a football.”‘

I can search for my mind.

Who can give peace of mind?

Mr. Emerson said, ” Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.”

Saint Paul writes, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Letter to the Philippians 4:7)

Told that such a peace exists, I am ready to drop everything and start that search.

I want it.

My brain screams for it.

There is a catch,

This peace isn’t there to be found.

It is a gift.

A gift from God.

“Rejoice”, writes Paul, “Do not be anxious about anything!”

Anything?

ANYTHING!

Peace of mind.

It is there … for the accepting.

Someone is making this harder than it has to be.

Must be me.

1.3.2020 – flower versus flour

flower versus flour
two syllables against one
Lose a syllable?

I am always counting syllables.

I see a bumper sticker or a bill board while driving and I divide the words into syllables.

I ran across this anomaly the other day.

Flower and Flour.

Sound very much the same.

But in pronunciation, very different.

I was intrigued.

According to the website, https://www.howmanysyllables.com/, a syllable is the sound of a vowel that is created when pronouncing an A, E, I, O, U, or Y.

Flour is pronounced: fl-ow-r.

The O and U make one vowel sound, ow. The remaining sound is made by the R, which is not a vowel.

Since there is only 1 vowel sound from the vowels “ou”, there can be only 1 syllable.

flower is pronounced: fl-ow-er.

The OW make one vowel sound. The remaining sound is made by the ER.

Since the E is a vowel and there are two vowel sounds, flower is 2 syllables.

I should have known.

Have to love words.
