August 6 – I would have been

haunted until death,
even beyond, by those cries
desperate for help

In June, 2019, the Italian Government in Rome passed a new bill that punished non-governmental organisation rescue boats bringing migrants to Italy without permission with fines of up to €50,000 and possible imprisonment for crew members.

Carlo Giarratano, a Sicilian fisherman continues to help the boat people of the Mediterranean in spite of the new decree. (Sicilian fishermen risk prison to rescue migrants: ‘No human would turn away’ by Lorenzo Tondo, Sat 3 Aug 2019 in The Guardian)

“No seaman would ever return to port without the certainty of having saved those lives,” says Carlo, whose family has sailed the Mediterranean for four generations.

“If I had ignored those cries for help, I wouldn’t have had the courage to face the sea again.”

“I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t think I might end up in prison when I saw that dinghy in distress,” says Carlo.

“But I knew in my heart that a dirty conscience would have been worse than prison. I would have been haunted until my death, and maybe even beyond, by those desperate cries for help.”

“I wonder if even one of our politicians has ever heard desperate cries for help at high sea in the black of night,” Gaspare says.

“I wonder what they would have done. No human being – sailor or not – would have turned away.”

How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

So says Big Bill (Merchant of Venice: Act 5 Scene 1) but maybe more recognized as being said by Willie Wonka.

I am encouraged that somewhere, by someone, the small miracle of ‘doing the right thing, because its the right thing to do‘ is taking place.

August 5 – layer on layer

layer on layer
each worry, like a blanket
can’t get out of bed

Sleepless nights, examining, questioning, rationalizing everything on the plate along with items on the way, unforeseen but imagined.

Feel each thought and worry as a blanket on top.

At the first the weight is manageable.

As the layers continue to pile on the weight becomes oppressive.

If allowed, panic could push anxiety out and take over.

Can’t get out of the bed.

Can’t get out from under the layers.

Solution?

Crawl back in.

Burrow under the layers.

Hide.

Hibernate.

Make them go away.

Aug 4 – daily mass shootings

daily mass shootings
dumbfounded, distressed, it’s
cancer within us

For God’s sake, are we crazy?

In the face of history, of every line of philosophy, against the teaching of every religionist and seer and prophet the world has ever given us, we are still doing what our barbarous ancestors did when they came out of the caves and the woods!

Clarence Darrow, PLEA FOR LEOPOLD AND LOEB, 22 August 1924

Darrow was making a plea for Life in Prison over the Death Penalty.

What he would make of these public shootings, I cannot say, but I think I can come up with what he would say.

On the other hand, to take today’s newspaper back to 1924 and let Darrow read about these recent shootings, I am pretty sure he wouldn’t stop throwing up.

Aug 2 – steakolicous?

saw steakolicous . . .
really? really? OH really!
some words, not needed

The TV show, Barney Miller, had an episode where an English Professor was arrested for assaulting an Ad Man who used the phrase, “crun-crun-crunchiest,” to describe pickles (Barney Miller: The Psyhic.)

The Professor says, “It’s not just a matter of a stupid pickle slogan. The manipulation of language is one of the primary methods used by those in power to confuse and divert the public.

A false statement isn’t a lie. It’s simply “no longer operative” . “War” becomes “Pacification” and “Bombing” becomes “Vertical deployment of anti-personnel devices”.

The English Language is one of the most beautiful and expressive of all tongues. It is being corrupted and debased by chronic misuse, manufactured lingo, like that…dull-witted cliches, redundancies, mindless phraseology’s. Save up to 50% and more; What does that mean?

Steakolicous?

I saw this word on a billboard driving home the other day.

I didn’t catch the name of the restaurant.

I didn’t catch the rest the message on the billboard.

I focused on the word steakolicious.

Really?

To further the moment, I believe the word was written in cursive.

Really?

Make up a word.

Make it hard to read is such a way that eliminates a large part of today’s audience.

Really?

Does this motivate anyone to order this?

To look forward to ordering this somewhere?

Who writes this stuff?

Who PAYS for this stuff?

As I always tell my wife, this was the ad campaign that was selected by the client.

This was the campaign, or concept, that won.

Consider what the losing campaigns must have been.

Picture that meeting where this was pitched.

Steakolicous?

Really?

Beyond all other considerations and questions, let’s just focus on the word.

What is wrong with any of these:

Sadly the episode ends with the Professor in jail and the Ad man wandering out, musing to himself, ” . . . ko-ko-kosher-est . . . Ko-Ko-kosher-IFIC.”

The Professor says “Unfortunately, it’s often the very people who are trying to preserve the society, who are the first to be persecuted by it.”
